🌿 Taxonomy & Distribution
Species of the genus Dendrobium, described in 1859 by Miquel.
Commonly called The Grand Dendrobium.
Native to New Guinea, Bougainville, Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu, found from sea level up to 1100 m.
Grows epiphytically on trees in swampy lowland forests, mountain forests, and even coconut plantations.
🌸 Plant & Flower Characteristics
Medium to large-sized epiphyte, occasionally lithophytic, with stems up to 122 cm
long.
Leaves: Lanceolate to ovate, leathery, up to 40 cm long.
Inflorescence: Axillary racemes, 20–40 cm long, carrying up to 20 flowers.
Flowers: About 7–8 cm across, twisted, alien-like, with green, yellow, white, and reddish-mahogany tones.
Fragrance: Sweet, reminiscent of honey.
Blooming season: Winter to early spring.
