Paraphalaenopsis laycockii is a rare, pendant-growing orchid species native to Borneo, distinguished by its terete leaves and fragrant summer-blooming flowers.
🌍 Distribution & Habitat
Found in Central and Southern Borneo (Kalimantan).
Grows as a monopodial epiphyte in lowland and hill rainforests, often in hot,
humid conditions.
Adapted to pendant growth, with spirally arranged, terete (cylindrical) leaves.
🌸 Morphology & Flowers
Leaves: Up to 5 terete, grooved, pointed, dark green leaves, fleshy and pendent.
Inflorescence: Axillary, subcapitate, bearing 2–15 densely packed flowers.
Flowers: Size: 7.5 cm across
Texture: Fleshy, oddly fragrant
Season: Blooms in summer
🌱 Cultivation Notes
Best grown mounted or in hanging baskets to accommodate its pendant habit.
Requires intermediate to warm temperatures and bright light/full sun.
Culture is similar to Phalaenopsis, but with the added need for free-hanging growth.
Strong air movement and high humidity are beneficial, mimicking its rainforest habitat.
Rare species: Not commonly available in trade, mostly seen in specialized collections.
Unique growth habit: Pendant, terete leaves distinguish it from typical Phalaenopsis.
Fragrant flowers: Summer-blooming, relatively large (7.5 cm), making it highly desirable for collectors.
