Dendrobium Nestor is a classic, highly beloved primary hybrid between Dendrobium anosmum and Dendrobium parishii, registered in 1892 and still widely grown today. It combines the long, pendulous, fragrant canes of anosmum with the compact, intensely coloured, sweetly scented blooms of parishii.
Colour: Shades of pink, purple, or magenta depending on clone; parishii influence often deepens the lip colour.
Lip: Usually, darker purple with a velvety throat.
Fragrance: Very strong, sweet fragrance—one of its defining traits.
Bloom duration: Typically, 3–4 weeks.
Blooming season: Spring, on leafless, mature canes.
Flowering habit: Clusters of blooms along the cane nodes.
Canes: Long, pendulous, often reaching 1 m or more over time due to anosmum influence.
Leaves: Deciduous; foliage drops before flowering.
Growth pattern: New growths emerge in spring, mature through summer, then rest in winter.
Bright filtered light (50–60% shade).
Too little light = weak flowering.
Thrives in warm to hot conditions (24–34°C).
Active growth (spring–summer): Water heavily and fertilise regularly.
Dormancy (winter): Reduce watering sharply keeping it too wet in winter will prevent flowering.
